Bug Nelson has shared a new album, titled Combustible Body Armor, produced by Cusho. Operating out of Brooklyn, Nelson has spent his time building something far more resilient than a viral hit: a distinct, unhurried artistic voice. His charm lies in his scale. Where many of his contemporaries construct exaggerated, larger-than-life personas, Nelson turns his lens downward toward the mundane, finding beauty, absurdity, and humor in the ordinary moments most people gloss over.
That understated philosophy anchors his newest project, Combustible Body Armor. Entirely produced by Cusho, the album feels less like a collection of desperate radio bids and more like a fully realized, lived-in world. Cusho’s production provides the ideal canvas—dust-caked loops, rich textures, and warm, jazz-tinted samples that give the rap space to breathe rather than smothering it in modern tropes.
The chemistry between the two is obvious from the jump. On “assorted luggage” (featuring Josh Alias), Nelson glides over hypnotic loops with a relaxed, almost conversational cadence that makes his off-kilter observations instantly engaging. But the record isn’t a one-note affair. “Lorem ipsum” (with Cooper) pulls the mood into darker, murkier waters, where moody production matches a sharper, more introspective pen. Tracks like “JUMPSCARE!” offer lush, atmospheric backdrops for some of Nelson’s slickest punchlines, showing off a deceptive level of meticulous craftsmanship beneath his casual delivery.
By the time the album reaches “CANNONBALL RICHARDS”—a punchy, guitar-driven closer backed by a heavy bassline—it’s clear why Combustible Body Armor works so well. It doesn’t rely on gimmicks or aggressive posturing. Instead, Nelson and Cusho simply lean into their instincts, trusting that authentic storytelling and sharp production will always outlast whatever trend happens to be blowing up this week.
