Rather than making his musical identity more complicated, those different experiences seem to have given McKenna more freedom. “TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR” doesn’t sound like an artist trying to choose between his influences. Instead, the styles overlap naturally, creating something that feels increasingly personal.
The song also benefits from its balance of immediacy and emotion. It has the kind of rhythm and melody that can pull listeners in quickly, but there is a wistful quality beneath the upbeat surface. The production, created with Los Angeles producers Max Topelson, Sighmon and Berlo, gives the track room to build while leaving its rougher character intact.
